Cameras:

Almost every single film nominated for an Oscar in 2014 utilised cameras made by ARRI - most commonly the Arricam LT (Lite), Arricam ST (Studio), Alexa Plus, and/or Alexa Studio.

The Arricam range of cameras are traditional 35mm Film cameras, whereas the Alexa range of cameras are digital. The DP of each individual film would have worked alongside the director, and possibly concept artists, in order to select the style that they thought would best fit their desired aesthetic. For example, on 12 Years a Slave, they opted to use film cameras; for the more CGI intense Gravity, they used digital. Interestingly, The Wolf of Wall Street utilised both types of camera, in order to create the final piece.

Phedon Papamichael, the DP for Nebraska wanted to recreate the old school film look, but whilst also using more modern filmmaking techniques, mostly for ease of use. Despite using the same sort of high end digital camera used in films like Gravity, they were able to utilise lenses, and post-production effects, in order to establish one of the most critically acclaimed black and white, traditional looking films of at least the past few years.

In big budget movies, DSLRs are considered cheap, and disposable. For example, in The Avengers, they used Canon 5Ds in order to get close up/POV shots of explosions, without damaging their more valuable equipment.

The independent filmmaking world, and smaller content creators are currently experiencing the advent of commercially available 4K technology, and easily accessible cameras that provide cinematic quality. For example, my friend Tomek recently uploaded some experiments utilising the BlackMagic Production Camera, and the Canon GX7. The fact that YouTube is now capable of displaying 4K footage, on any hardware powerful enough to run it, is yet another sign of how technologically advanced we are becoming.
